My Story

Hi Everyone!

My name is Chris and I have lived in urban Mid-Michigan, Saginaw, all my life. A couple years ago we moved to the rural area and a little further north to Sterling, MI. I have been married to my husband Dan for 33 years this year. I have 2 adult children and 5 grandchildren. My son’s family lives in Michigan as well and our daughter and her family moved to Alabama over a year ago.

I have a BSIT degree and currently I am an EMR consultant for the operating rooms and anesthesia for a popular electronic medical record that is now used worldwide. I am normally a weekly traveler but since Covid-19 hit the USA, my wings have been clipped for almost a year now. Not sure if I will be traveling for this current career or not. I have been in the EMR consulting world for over 10 years now. Previous to that I worked at a local hospital as the surgery scheduling coordinator then moved to the EMR project team which lead me to be a consultant.

Looking for Something More

Since I’ve been home working remote, I have been looking to find something to help me in my retirement years. Like most people I didn’t really have extra money to save for retirement. I think a lot of people are in the same situation. I searched to find, what could I do for a retirement income?

How many of you feel you saved enough to comfortably retire?

How many of you are afraid to retire because of lack of income?

I have these same fears. I started searching on line, for ways to become financially independent, something that I can fall back on during my retirement age. I started to discover affiliate programs, that I didn’t know existed or at least didn’t know what they were called. I stumbled across affiliate programs, which introduced me to niches.

I checked out a few different affiliate programs but felt uncomfortable until I found Wealthy Affiliate. I started researching this organization. I liked how you could start for free to get a feel for what it’s like. So, I started my first website “Gardening Tips for Beginners” on my domain www.simongettinorth.com. I am at the point with this website, it’s just up keep and adding more interesting posts about gardening, which I love. I have lots of ideas for this website, especially when the snow melts. Feel free to visit my Gardening Tips for Beginners website, for gardening tips and discussions.

After digging into more about Wealthy Affiliate, I learned I could help people with the same fears I have as well. The Wealthy Affiliate University Program is training me how to earn a passive income by writing informative blogs about a niche, “People Approaching Retirement Age”. They have an Online Entrepreneur Certification with 5 levels and, Affiliate Bootcamp training, with 7 levels of training. The best part is you can start all of this for free. I had my website up and running live within a couple of classes. Each class improves and teaches you about continuing to improve your website and how to write content to help people.

Wealthy Affiliate Classroom TrainingHow to Achieve Your Personal Goals

I am still currently working as an EMR consultant but working towards being an affiliate marketer on my websites. As an affiliate marketer you can grow your business using affiliate marketing and search advertising income through an online network. To be successful, you blog, write article, and reviews about your niche, informative articles to help people, drive traffic to your website, and create conversations through social medias, email and comments on the website. 1. Hey . Thank you for the sweet article. I wish I came accross it long before my mom took retirement. Going into retirement without a plan of action can be frustrating even for the kids. I saw her being frustrated by boredom and her health decorating daily. I really applaud you for this and wish you all the best.

    • Hi Bogadi,

Thank you for your comments.  I am not sure what happened but one night I just started looking for something to supplement my income and listening to the Rich Dad, Poor Dad author and I started looking for something that would be doable, not investing in real estate that could be really risky.  I felt Wealthy Affiliate allows you to get your feet wet first to see if this is something that I was interested in.  I am so glad I found WA.

  2. Amazing story. Love this reading this post. I joined Wealthy Affiliate a year ago and I think it is the best decision I’ve ever made. I can now make passive income with affiliate marketing. I do think affiliate marketing is the best business model to get started. It’s easy and pretty profitable. I wish you success.

    • Hi Isaac,

Thank you for your post.  I just started a little over a month.  Do you have any words of wisdom for someone who is over a month to 2 months in?  Hearing other people say this works is very encouraging.  I am glad I took the plunge.

  3. I’m so glad I found your website. We have many things in common I also have a BSIT, I’m a stay at home mom, and I’m looking for an extra income. To answer your question I have not prepared for retirement. In fact, I never really thought about it until now. I also thought well, when it come time to retire, I would get some sort of retirement check boy was I wrong…haha

Either way, I guess it’s never too late to start planning and saving. I’m definitely afraid of approaching retirement age because, well, I have no income saved up. I haven’t worked in 10 years. So, yeah that’s pretty scary…

Yeah, I’ve heard of Wealthy Affiliate, I’ll take a look into that program. Do you recommend the program even if I can’t write informative blog post? What if I can’t come up with an idea?

Either way, thanks for the encouragement…have an awesome weekend!

    • Hi Lakisha,

I am not a creative writer either.  I love gardening and want to learn more about it.  Do you have an interest that you love or passionate about that could be your niche?  The community will help you with ideas as well.  As long as you research your subject that you want to write about, then you will be fine.  They teach you to write like you are talking to a person, not an essay for a teacher.  Using correct punctuation and grammar is a must but they have a great tool to catch spelling and grammatical errors.  There are thousands in the WA community willing to help.  I feel its a viable option and you can start it for free, and get your website up and running first.  After you start to get an income then upgrade to premium.  It will take some time though, its not an overnight, get rich quick thing.  Like any business, it takes work, dedication and of course time.  Thank you for your comments.  I wish you luck in your retirement income search.

  4. It’s interesting to see how times change. I never imagined we could work from home. And I didn’t think we could work on things we liked and were our passion. Now all this seems to be possible through affiliate marketing. I know the market is not saturated now but it could be in a few years from now.

I enjoyed reading about your experience with affiliate marketing as you combine it with being an EMR consultant. I wish you all the best.

  5. It is a very good idea to always have some passive income and certainly when you are nearing retirement.  Not many people will be completely covered for the rest of their lives. For myself, there was an additional and very significant factor and that is that I need to keep doing meaningful things every day. I found both in the affiliate marketing business, operating two websites where I can work from home and as much as I want and still earn money on the side. Good idea!

    • Hi Jerry,
Thank you for your comments.  I am just about 3 months into this adventure and I currently have 2 websites.  I am hoping this becomes my retirement job.  I also need things to do after retirement and I like working on my websites too.

  6. Your post really got me thinking. I am not near retirement age, but I realize I need to start preparing for it. I am very familiar with Wealthy Affiliate, and I am very pleased. I like you tried other affiliate programs, and I did not feel comfortable with them. I came across Wealthy Affiliate by mistake when the other two Affiliate programs I tried didn’t pan out. Now I am a part-time blogger and can’t be happier. I believe that many people will continue to work from home so keep doing the gardening blog because people are desperately looking to make the home more comfortable more than ever. I loved your post and how you really shared what we all should be thinking about. Keep up the great work!

  7. Well, now you have really made me think.  Yep, I am definitely getting closer to the retirement age.  I love what I do now, which is working remotely online, which gives me a lot of freedom but yes, you’re right I need to think about the financial freedom I will need in the future for my retirement.  Great article thanks

    • Hi Jamila,

Thank you for your comments.  I also work remotely from home.  I am still an EMR consultant.  I work on this on my free time, hoping to create a passive income to be able to really stay home in a couple years and work my own hours.
